AI for Trade
AI for Trade
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping global trade by lowering trade costs, facilitating regulatory compliance, and creating new opportunities for firms of all sizes. AI has the potential to deliver significant gains for both global trade and GDP, provided that digital infrastructure, skills, and policy frameworks keep pace. The WTO seeks to promote constructive dialogue and a cooperative regulatory environment that supports the development and deployment of AI, while mitigating its risks. Under the banner of "AI for Trade", the WTO's work has three pillars: solutions; capacity building; and knowledge.
Solutions
The WTO has published a collection of case studies showcasing how governments, businesses and organizations around the world are already applying AI in trade. This will be a living resource, continuously updated as new solutions and cases emerge.
- AI for Trade in Action: a searchable collection of case studies of AI applied to trade-related activities.
Capacity Building
On 15 September 2026, the WTO hosted a first series of practical masterclasses that allow government officials to engage directly with AI tools designed to support trade policy analysis and negotiations. It will also launch an online course on AI and trade and is ready to deliver regional and national technical assistance activities in this domain.
Tools for trade officials
- TINA by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP): Users can identify commodities for trade negotiations, build a negotiating list and simulate the effects of tariff reductions.
- LEGAL TINA by UNESCAP: Allows users to search and compare provisions across trade agreements.
- Clairk by Digital Policy Alert: Aims to give users a better understanding of digital regulations across jurisdictions.
